We found a quote that describes the conflict between civilization and savagery. It states, â€Å"Man†¦ is a tame or civilized animal; never the less, he requires proper instruction and a fortunate nature, and then all animals he becomes the most divine and most civilized; but if he be insufficiently or ill-educated he is the most savage of earthly creatures. † Civilization  The rules and organized meetings in the story are used to keep order and it is their own form of government. In society, we use rules and a government system to keep order. The boys created their own version of the rules to fit their surroundings. In a way, they adapted society to their new surroundings. The huts that were built were a constant reminder of the homes they had left behind along with all the rules within their homes. The boys were attached to society at the beginning of the novel and used these things to protect themselves from the harshness of the real world. At the beginning, the boys were all for creating rules and keeping order as the quote from page 42 of the novel shows, â€Å"We’ve got to have rules and obey them. After all, we’re not savages. † The boys, especially Jack and Ralph were intending to instill the rules they followed at home at the island as well. On our poster, we used a picture of the Constitution to represent the rules of civilization. We also used the quote from page 42 in the novel shown above. We used these because we thought that the Constitution showed the basis of civilization and the quote showed the boys bond to it. Savagery: In the novel, there was a lot of savagery. The boys had killed the sow for the thrill and not for the meat. In real life, while people hunt, they do it so they can provide food for their friends and family. They are not obsessed with killing as these young boys in the novel are. Also, the boys in Jacks’ tribe used face paint. While this isn’t a direct relation to savagery, face paint allows a person to hide behind a mask of indifference. It is a way for people to overcome their fears and stay unemotional to the happenings of a war or even to just hide themselves. The boys use the paint to inflict fear in others and also use it as a way to lose themselves to indifference while killing. Jacks tribe had a way of thinking that Ralphs group did not. Jacks tribe mostly thought of themselves and had a sense of self preservation. They would do anything to survive including stealing the other boys’ fire. Another thing the boys did that clearly showed savagery was that they set the island aflame. In their search for Ralph, they lost all common sense and decided to burn Ralph out. They were destroying not only the island but also their only sources of food and shelter. In the novel, Jack is the first to succumb to savagery. The rest of the other boys slowly followed. We believe Jack gave in earlier because he didn’t necessarily care for the rules either way. He just did whatever he pleased. Ralph on the other hand had a father that was a Navy officer and was more exposed to rules and society. For this reason, Ralph never fully gave in. Ralph got his first taste of savagery during Simons killing, but afterwards he felt too guilty to ever do that again. Savagery grew on him once again in the last chapter when the boys were trying to burn him out. On our poster, we decided to use a picture of a war between Spanish soldiers and Native Americans to show savageness since the soldiers were savagely invading the Native Americans land. The quote we used comes from page 152 in the novel. It is from when Jacks tribe was about to kill the pig. It states, â€Å"Kill the beast, cut his throat, spill his blood. † The quote shows not only the boys’ primitive nature but also the savagery they are exposed to.

George Gmelch’s piece Baseball magic is a classic example of a piece that makes you rethink what you thought you knew. I would have never linked a relationship between religion and the practices that baseball teams or individuals have on a day to day basis. It has now become evidently clear that these practices, whether it be eating in a particular spot every day, or going to church faithfully every Sunday, have tremendous effects on our everyday lives. Gmelch who presents his case with American baseball players, shows the various taboos and fetishes that these players have and they believe that these rituals are linked to their winning or losing a game. The most alarming factor is that these professional players forget or rather ignore the fact that they possess true abilities and skill, which is how they got onto the team in the first place. They idolize prized possessions that they believe give them luck and the lack of these rituals or failure of these rituals does not sto p them, but merely makes them create new ones to fit their needs. It is as if their skills got them into the sport, but their rituals keep them playing. In a way these players are not too far from me in my everyday life. If I studied in a particular way and earned good grades, it is more likely that I will continue this same way of studying until it fails and then I would create another one to fit my needs. Rituals seem to be a common trend with the human species, it is how we make sense of the unknown. Throughout Gmelch’s ethnography the most common trend that these players had was that they were trying to have control over what they deemed uncontrollable. These rituals gave them stability and hope that they would have some effects over reality and even if their rituals were not directly related with winning or losing the game, the fact that they might be able to control the outcome of the game was still thrilling. Overall, we all part take in rituals on a daily basis, whether it be brushing our top teeth before the bottom, touching the wall before you leave your room, or never  leaving the house without checking the stove. All these things help us cope with the day to day uncertainties of life. It is not the power of the rituals that make us satisfied, but the power we give to the rituals that make us feel like we are in control and are masters of uncertainty.

Key Terms Federal Budget Deficit: The difference between the federal government’s annual revenues and expendituresNational Debt: Total of all unpaid funds borrowed by the U.S. government The debate over whether the federal government should borrow money to extend unemployment benefits beyond the typical 26 weeks at a time when the number of jobless is high and public debt is growing rapidly shed light on terms that are easily confused among the public - the federal deficit and national debt. For example, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, a Republican from Wisconsin, said the policies put forth buy the White House including the jobless benefits extension in 2010 represent a job-killing economic agenda - focused on more borrowing, spending, and taxing - [that] will keep the unemployment rate high for years to come. The American people are fed up with Washingtons push to spend money we dont have, add to our crushing burden of debt, and evade accountability for the dismal results, Ryan said in a statement. The terms national debt and federal deficit are widely used by our politicians. But the two are not interchangeable. Heres a quick explanation of each. What is the Federal Deficit? The deficit is the difference between the money federal government takes in, called receipts, and what it spends, called outlays, each year. The federal government generates revenue through income, excise and social insurance taxes as well as fees, according to the U.S. Department of Treasurys Bureau of the Public Debt. The spending includes Social Security and Medicare benefits along with all other outlays such as medical research and interest payments on the debt. When the amount of spending exceeds the level of income, there is a deficit and the Treasury must borrow the money needed for the government to pay its bills. Think of it this way: Lets say you earned $50,000 in a year, but had $55,000 in bills. You would have a $5,000 deficit. You would need to borrow $5,000 to make up the difference. The U.S. federal budget deficit for fiscal year 2018 is $440 billion, according to the White House’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB). In January 2017, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projected that federal deficits would increase for the first time in nearly a decade. In fact, the CBO’s analysis showed the increase in the deficit will drive the total federal debt to â€Å"almost unprecedented levels.† While it projected the deficit to actually drop in 2017 and 2018, the CBO sees the deficit then increasing to at least $601 billion in 2019 thanks to rising Social Security and Medicare costs. How the Government Borrows The federal government borrows money by selling Treasury securities such as T-bills, notes, inflation-protected securities and savings bonds to the public. The government trust funds are required by law to invest surpluses in Treasury securities. What is the National Debt? The national debt is the total value of unpaid funds borrowed by the U.S. government.  The value of all Treasury securities issued to the public and to the government trust funds is considered that years deficit and becomes part of the larger, ongoing national debt. One way to think about the debt is as the governments accumulated deficits, the Bureau of the Public Debt suggests. The maximum sustainable deficit is said by economists to be 3 percent of gross domestic product. The Treasury Department keeps a running tab on the amount of debt held by the U.S. government. According to the U.S. Treasury, the total national debt stood at $20.245 trillion as September 30, 2018. Nearly all of that debt is subject to the statutory debt ceiling. However, under current law, the debt ceiling is suspended, allowing the government may to borrow as much as it wants through March 1, 2019. At that time, Congress will either have to raise the debt ceiling or suspend it again as it has in recent years While it is often claimed that â€Å"China owns our debt,† the Treasury Department reports that as of June 2017, China only held about 5.8% of the total U.S. debt, or about $1.15 trillion. The Impact of Both on the Economy As the debt continues to increase, creditors can become concerned about how the U.S. government plans to repay it, notes About.com Guide Kimberly Amadeo. Over time, she writes, creditors will expect higher interest payments to provide a greater return for their increased perceived risk. Higher interest costs can dampen economic growth, Amadeo notes. As a result, she notes, the U.S. government may be tempted to let the value of the dollar fall so that the debt repayment will be in cheaper dollars, and less expensive. It could be expected that implementation would do more for living standards and GDP than any single reform that is publicly identified and costed. The cumulative benefit to the treasury from these reforms taken over the period between 2010 and 2040 is projected at $325 billion, which is the public funding that is required for Canada’s major future needs (Yusuf & Nabeshima, 2012).
